This was another great Novella from Brandon. The plot was super interesting throughout the book, and it was more of a traditional Greek comedy (like another reviewer said) than anything else.Characterization was the only weak spot of the novel, and the characters felt real! I felt for them when (spoliers) happened, and their actions were realistic and very human.
By far the best part was the world building. The world is incredibly complex, but he makes it understandable and interesting at the same time. I can't wait for more books set in this world.
Overall a great book. I liked "Shadows for Silence" better, but I'm looking forward to another Novella in this universe just the same.

Perfect State Single eBook Brandon Sanderson Reviews
Yet another fantastic story from Mr. Sanderson. As with most novellas, this was a short read, but a fun one. There was a little more mature feel to it that some of his other novels, but there's nothing wrong with that, certainly.
This wouldn't be a Cosmere novel, but anyone that's read his Legion books knows that being outside of his Cosmere allows him certain liberties that the Cosmere does not.
I'm glad to see he's expanding his writing and the nature of the story tells me he needed it.
You'll understand when you read it.
If you are a fantasy lover and haven't read Brandon Sanderson yet, you really really need to. If you also don't have enough time or energy to read his 1,000+ epic fantasy books, then this novella is great choice for a starting off point. This is the third novella Sanderson has published this year and I'm so grateful that he is the kind of author who publishes shorter works between coming out with those large epic fantasy books I mentioned, mostly because when I need a fantasy fix for my reading life Sanderson delivers.

I came into the book with high expectations. I love Brandon Sanderson’s Stormlight Archives and Mistborn novels. His ability to create fascinating fantasy worlds causes me both reading pleasure and immense envy. After reading The Perfect State, I still envy Sanderson’s awesome writing.
The Perfect State is set in a future world where an almighty emperor, Kai, after conquering the world and whatnot, has been told he needs to go on a date and procreate. This understandably stresses him out. The novella, which I would argue is more of a short story length, is categorized as young adult. I must fall into that category because I certainly relate to people wanting you to settle down and procreate already. Poor Kai. I do not however relate to having conquered the world, after reading the book, I’m okay with my lack of world domination. It seems very stressful. Not sure I want that much responsibility.

A really fun read. Full of interesting and unexpected plot twists. I'm not sure if this is the only science fiction that Brandon has ever written or not, but it was quite good, and shows he can venture out beyond fantasy. I guess in some ways, his Reckoner series was a blend of sci-fi and fantasy, and so is this, but this was done much different, and in my opinion, so much better than Reckoners, and was really interesting and fascinating. It left me wanting more, and I hope he writes a sequel some day. If you're a fan of good sci-fi or Brandon's works in general, I couldn't recommend this more highly.
"Perfect State" is an engaging novella from fantasy writer Brandon Sanderson that perfectly showcases his talent at creating an interesting and vivid world within just a few short pages. The main character in this short story is the god-like, seemingly immortal emperor Kairominas, who has conquered his world with a vast army and the use of magics (Sanderson's ability to create variations on magics in each of his worlds always amazes me!). Kairominas is forced to answer the calling of a higher power despite many protests....and I'll stop the recap there to avoid spoilers.
Sanderson weaves together plot concepts familiar to readers and/or movie-goers. While some of the plot lines aren't exactly unique, Sanderson creates a wonderful amalgamation of character archetypes and plot twists from different genres that make the story seems familiar yet still fresh and exciting.
Highly recommended for Sanderson fans or fantasy fan in general for a delightful, short read!
Despite the interesting concept, I didn't enjoy this story as much as I expected to. Somehow the main character was difficult to engage with, and the overall plot didn't draw me in. Nevertheless, Sanderson has a stellar imagination and comes up with some great ideas. I just think this one could have been better in its execution.
“The Perfect State” is a science fiction / fantasy novella by Brandon Sanderson. In it, Kai (a self proclaimed God – Emperor) is forced into a situation where he must face the reality that his success, power, and rule may be more fabrication than achievement. When he is compelled to meet with a beautiful and mysterious woman from another “state”, Kai is thrust not only into a battle with his nemesis, but also into a battle with himself about what is real.
In this short novella, Sanderson is his usual brilliant self. The story opens with very little backdrop or background to the characters and instead presses forward instantly into the meat of the story. Then as the characters deal with each other and the evolving plot, Sanderson slowly but surely lays out what’s really going on. He gives us enough history for the story to make sense, without feeling the need to become exhaustive with all of the background information. The story is quick and can be read in one sitting, but is still easily good enough to saturate the reader in the world and give a solid feeling of satisfaction once it reaches its conclusion. There is very little to critique Sanderson on here. The story is great and fun to read. Well done as usual.
